Motivated by interest

The hardest part of understanding motivation is grasping interest-based motivation — the drive to explore and solve complex problems.

This is the motivation for expertise, also known as the motivation for knowledge. People often say, “I strive for knowledge,” but that’s not quite accurate. Don’t deceive yourself. People driven by interest enjoy figuring things out. They are curious, eager to learn, and fascinated by theoretical and abstract ideas. These pursuits may have no immediate practical value, but they often prove extremely valuable in the long run.

If you are someone motivated by interest, the first thing you need to let go of is the belief that you are impractical. That isn’t true. People who possess a motivation for knowledge have a rare and complex form of talent.

Those driven by status tend to focus only on what can be used immediately and practically. Those driven by interest, however, find satisfaction in understanding how things work. For them, the process itself is the reward.
